Tea Story

This supreme, limited-edition Monkey Picked* Tie Guan Yin oolong tea, hails from the Anxi County in the Fujian Province of China and is the finest grade of oolong tea. Tie Guan Yin oolong is also known as ‘Iron Goddess of Mercy’ or ‘Iron Buddha’.

Our Monkey Picked Tie Guan Yin imparts a rich flavour with long-lasting floral and buttery notes.

This premium Tie Guan Yin is picked during the spring season - not by monkeys, but by professional tea pickers. The leaves used to produce this famous oolong, grow in higher elevations than other Tie Guan Yin grades. The high elevation creates an outstanding quality leaf. Therefore, this tea is an exclusive and sought-after variety amongst connoisseurs of oolong.

Our version of this superlative Tie Guan Yin tea, is handmade, with great care, by a small family of tea artisans.

* The term ‘Monkey Picked’ is a name used by tea merchants to label the highest quality oolong in their selection. Legend has it, that Buddhist monks would train monkeys to pick the leaves at the very top of tea trees. It is believed that these tea leaves were used to make the finest quality oolong tea, which was given in tribute the Emperor’s imperial court. Please note that the tea leaves used in this tea were not picked by monkeys. The term ‘Monkey Picked’ is merely a statement of the superior quality of this exquisite oolong tea.

An authentic tea!
Sunday, 9 September 2018  |  Apostolos

Fragrant and more floral than others I tried, this is a high quality tea. Bright yellow colour and a light and refreshing taste - my preference is to steep a bit longer. For the second infusion, a hint of 'egg yolk' taste, this is an authentic tea!

Delicious tea, picked by monkeys or not
Tuesday, 23 May 2017  |  George

This is expensive tea. Honestly I bought for the novelty. But it really is so good. I'm not going to be regularly stocking up on it, but might buy it for myself as a treat every now and then. Monkeys may have picked it, or simply point the way to the high quality tea, and that's what this is. I love it.
