The origins of our 2021 Harvest Anji Bai Cha

We are excited to bring you our 2021 harvest of Anji Bai Cha, a rare and exquisite loose leaf green tea.

Our No. 72 Anji Bai Cha is produced in Zhejiang Province, China, and is expertly picked by experienced tea farmers. Harvested in early spring during a very short harvesting period 3 weeks, the thin, long tender buds are carefully handpicked and pan dried, with little or no processing, almost similar to making white teas.

This exceptional Anji Bai Cha offers a very clean and light liquor with a hint of pale greenish colour, accompanied by the most refreshingly delicate and soothing cup. It imparts a complex flavour with mellow with lovely mild lemon notes, a silky mouthfeel and a lingering subtle sweet finish.

The cultivar was founded in the 1930s with no more than fifty plants.

Ingredients

Pure Chinese green tea

Tasting notes

This tea offers fresh berries, spring blossom aroma and clear vibrant citrus yellow infusion. A cup with multiple depth of sweet strawberries, green apple and orchid notes with lingering sweet mouthfeel.

Region

The West Lake is an oval-shaped freshwater lake in Hangzhou City, Zhejiang Province, Eastern China. Mountains dominate the region on three sides where rivers carrying runoff from the peaks flow into the lakes. The West Lake itself sits at an elevation of 10m, however the peaks of the Tianmu Mountains, to the West of the city. can soar up to 1,000m above sea level.

The climate here is temperate Humid Subtropical (CFA), with strong seasonality. There is generally cloud cover year round within the West Lake, with just a gentle breeze picking up across the sea to east. The summers are short and typically very hot, with temperatures fluctuating between 22°C and 34°C, with significant and persistent overcast skies paired with rainfall which drives humidity anywhere between 50% and 99% saturation.

As the season progresses into autumn, the temperature, precipitation and humidity decrease until the winter, which experiences lower rainfall than any other time of the year, but with temperatures between 5°C and 8°C. Spring brings warmer weather and more rain, with humidity around 25%. The lake draws its water from the Qiantang river. It is famous for its lotuses, which bloom in June.

The shores are home to hundreds species of plant, including rare, protected species such as the wild soybean or short-spike bamboo. To lake is surrounded by abundant trees, including peach trees, willows, magnolia and cherry trees. The lake was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011 for its outstanding garden design. The fertile hills above the lake, which are misty for most of the year, offer the perfect landscape for tea growing.
