With Summer on its way, Niroula’s Pine Oak Smoky First Flush Darjeeling tea, from this year's harvest holds the perfect balance of fruity Darjeeling flavour and smoky aroma of pine-oak. It is to no wonder it is being called the “Champagne of Teas” by the UK Tea Council due to its delectable flavour.

The tea itself is made at a micro tea processing unit called Niroula’s Tea Farm in the remote village of Poobong, situated in the stunning Himalayan mountains.
How is the tea made to give such a distinctive smoky flavour?
The process of making this tea involves a slight rolling of the leaves once they have been naturally withered.
The smoke is then infused into the tea by passing the rolled leaves through a compact pine smoke chamber, a process which is key within the manufacturing process as it creates the pleasing flavour that the tea has upon the tongue.

The history behind the tea
It’s actually a very interesting story as to how this micro tea processing farm began. It all started when tea enthusiast Mr. Bikram Niroula set up this unit to bio-organically grow the tea leaves to ensure that full flavour and smoky aroma was acquired and preserved.
Due to the local focus and small scale of Niroula’s Tea House, the tea growers are able to benefit much more from this small scale processing unit, acquiring the true financial worth of the leaves they are selling. This is something that they were missing when working within larger tea gardens, causing the farmers to be deprived of the money they should be getting from this business.
Bhawesh Niroula, who took over the farm from his father Bikram Niroula, realised the importance of providing a high quality Darjeeling tea around the world, therefore in 2014 he revolutionised his father’s tea farm so that the local farmers adhered to the terms and conditions of the larger tea plantations.
He was the first and only local small farmer in 200 years to open and own his own small tea processing unit in Darjeeling tea. What a fantastic achievement and we’re so pleased he did!
Are there any health benefits?
The Darjeeling tea leaves come from the Camellia Sinenisis plant, a vegetation which adds beneficial antioxidants to the tea.
Tea originally was drunk as a medicine before a beverage, therefore it is no surprise to hear that Niroula’s Darjeeling black tea holds curative and protective properties.
These antioxidants include theaglavins and thearubigins which help keep the heart free from fat, therefore helping with overall heart health, amongst other health benefits that teas naturally have within them.
