Guild of Fine Food and the British food Revolution

What does fermentation, urban farming, matcha, bowl foods, vegetarianism and Japanese cuisine have in common? They are all hot, trending concepts within the British foodie community.

If you are a keen traveller, you will know that Britain hasn’t got the best reputation when it comes to food. People from other corners of the world tend to associate British food with sloppy cottage pie, rough cut chips soaked in vinegar and builders’ tea that has been drowned in milk and sugar. However, a new movement of fine foods enthusiasts, talented chefs and small business innovators in our country are redefining British cuisine and our global food reputation.

"A new movement of fine foods enthusiasts, talented chefs and small business innovators in our country

are redefining British cuisine and our global food reputation ".

Famous chefs such as Jamie Oliver, Heston Blumenthal and Michel Roux Jr are setting a precedence by introducing healthy, modern and ethical food practices in our country. But it is not only within the chefs’ elite that Britain is evolving its food culture. A young generation of food enthusiast - also known as ‘foodies’ - has taken over the internet and social media sphere with blogs, Instagram photos and Tweets about fine foods and ethical food practices.

Ethical trends such as urban gardening, zero waste, veganism, ecology and ugly fruit and veg have taken the country by storm. But the British food movement goes way beyond social and environmental sustainability. At its core, the movement centres on providing delicious, healthy, ethical and innovative food to global citizens. The spirit of the movement is to think outside the box and use technology to bring out sensational flavours from naturally sourced produce.

After the Second World War, food consumption went through large scale industrialisation. Food shifted from being a personal, family-based activity to being a capitalist structure - ruled not by health, flavour and sustainable practices but by industrial efficiency, financial profit and cost per calorie. This post-war food model has resulted in a worldwide health epidemic, with people in the West suffering from obesity and obesity-related diseases such as diabetes and coronary heart diseases and people in developing country suffering from hunger. In both cases the core problem is malnutrition.

With the rise of social media and - by extension - a global communications revolution, consumers have, for the first time in history, gained a voice. The British food movement is fuelled by the anti-industrialisation of food.

"You are what you eat".

As the age-old proverb goes, you are what you eat. In this age of information, people are becoming increasingly aware of what they put in their mouth - and how food affects our health, the health of others, the health of our global society and the health of our planet.

The Guild of Fine Food has been at the heart of the British quality food scene since 1995. Each year, they host the Great Taste Awards, which is a prestigious event that celebrates the crème de la crème of British fine food products. A Great Taste award from the Guild of Fine Food’s panel of expert judges is the ultimate stamp of approval for any food or beverage brand. This year, we are the proud winners of no less than ten Great Taste awards and a total of fifteen Great Taste stars.

Our ‘Japanese Sencha Supreme Luxury Tea Triunes’ were awarded the ultimate three-star ranking which is given only to an elite of products that the Guild of Fine Food describes as: “Exquisite. Wow! Taste that!”. Additionally, our ‘Ceremonial Grade Matcha Green Tea Powder’ and our ‘Japanese Genmaicha Supreme Luxury Tea Triunes’ were awarded the two-star ranking which is given for the most outstanding products.

Furthermore, our ‘Finest Japanese Sencha’ loose leaf tea was awarded the one-star ranking for products that are simply delicious. These accolades are the ultimate acknowledgement of the supreme quality of our Japanese teas from Ise Bay. We work very closely with our Japanese colleagues to ensure that the tea is produced to the highest possible standards of great taste and social and environmental sustainability. It is because of this close relationship with the tea farmer that our Japanese teas have won a total of eight golden stars at this year’s Great Taste Awards.

"Our Japanese Sencha Supreme Luxury Tea Triunes were awarded the ultimate three-star ranking which is given only to an elite of products".

It was not only our Japanese teas that won awards this year. Our ‘Luxury Darjeeling First Flush Tea Triunes’ won the converted two-star ranking. The ancient knowledge of tea passed down from generation to generation in the famous Darjeeling tea district, shines through in this truly delicious black tea. Our founder, Sam Sameen, who has over 8 years’ experience as a tea-planter in Sri Lanka (Ceylon), states: “I have the utmost respect for our talented colleagues in India. It is their hard work and dedication to the quality of the final product, as well as the tender love and care given to the Camellia Sinensis plant in the tea fields, that has ensured us this prestigious award”.

One golden star was awarded to our ‘Luxury Vanilla Rooibos Tea Triunes’ caffeine-free tea from South Africa, our ‘Supreme Dragon Well Tea Triunes’ green tea from China, our ‘Taiwanese Milk Oolong Tea Triunes’ sweet tea from Taiwan, our ‘Jasmine Dragon Pearls Tea Triunes’ jasmine-green tea from China, and our ‘Exquisite English Breakfast Tea Triunes’ black tea from Ceylon (Sri Lanka).

Suffice it to say, we are extremely proud to have been awarded these ten prestigious fine food rankings - and to be a part of the foodie movement that provides better quality food and beverages to the people of the world.
