The Origins of our Houjicha Green Tea

Whilst the appearance of No. 65 Houjicha's loose-leaf more closely resembles a black tea, our tea makers craft this unexpected single-origin Japanese green tea from roasting tightly rolled green tea leaves along with the stems and stalks of the second flush at high temperature. The maturity of the leaves in combination with this intense process yields mixed loose leaf tea. When infused, the tea leaves produce a unique, reddish-brown infusion unlike any other within the green tea category.

Our Houjicha green tea leaves are grown from the Yabukita cultivar by Yosh Tsutsumi on the low lying plans of the Ise Bay in Mie Prefecture, Japan. The robust nature of this tea imparts a bold caramel flavour with a sweet taste and hints of roasted nuts. Its creamy undertones, mild astringency and moderate caffeine allow the infusion to be enjoyed as a relaxing after-dinner treat. This also makes our loose leaf Houjicha tea suitable for re-steeping.

Region

The Ise Bay is a cove situated just South East of Japan, in the Mie Prefecture, facing the Philippine Sea. The elevation across the plains varies between sea level and 64m above, and the climate is of the humid subtropical type (CFA).

Learn more about the Ise Bay

Strong seasonality defines this region. The summers are short and warm, with temperatures between 21°C and 30°C. As the season ends, autumn begins to see the temperature slowly drop over the months into the winter season, where temperatures hover between 4°C and 13°C. As winter ends, the spring allows temperatures to gently climb until they once again reach summer.

Across the year, the sky is mostly cloudy to overcast and brings with it low to medium amounts of rainfall. However, there is significant cloud cover and much larger amounts of rainfall during the summer months. In combination with warm temperatures, humidity peaks at 98% and contrasts the late autumn to winter months, where the air is typically very dry. In terms of wind, cool, blustery gales are picked up across the sea and brought inland all year long.

However, summer sees a much lower, more gentle breeze. The Bay, where the ocean waters meet the estuaries of the Kiso Three, Nikko and Honai rivers, is famous for its fish and seaweed. The Ise-Shima national park, on the southernmost tip of the bay, is home to loggerhead turtles, as well as native species of hibiscus and spider lily.
