Tea Story

We are pleased to introduce this highly anticipated First Flush Darjeeling tea. The exquisitely soft and aromatic leaves of this revered tea from the Makaibari garden, are plucked immediately after winter when the plants are bursting with succulent flavour. Harvested from one of the oldest tea estates in Darjeeling, the leaf imparts a gleaming, golden-yellow liquor with a smooth and subtle structure. Creating the very finest and well-balanced brew with a nuanced floral aroma - which is characteristic of this well-loved tea - this spring flush Darjeeling can be enjoyed at any time of the day, preferably without milk.

Located in Kurseong subdivision of the Darjeeling District, Makaibari sustains seven villages and circa 1,600 people. Three rivers flow through Makaibari and empty into the Balason - the primary river of the region.

Tea from the Makaibari Tea Estate is highly sought-after by tea enthusiasts, as it is one of the most premier tea gardens in Darjeeling. The Makaibari garden was established almost 160 years ago, making it one of the oldest family-owned tea gardens in Darjeeling. The farmers live by the mantra ‘Healthy Soil, Healthy Life’.

The mission of the Makaibari garden is to develop and nurture a sustainable community that evolves around building a harmonious relationship with nature. The garden, which is immersed in 1,100 acres of rainforest, boasts a plethora of wild animals, indigenous birds and rare insects that are found nowhere else in the world.

The garden was established in 1859 by the pioneering tea planter, G. C. Banerjee. For over 150 years, Makaibari has been tended by four generations of the Banerjee family. Since the 1970s, Makaibari has been run by Mr Swaraj Banerjee who has dedicated his entire life to the preservation and improvement of the soil, as well as the betterment of the lives of the workers and locals who depend on the estate.

Great tea, especially as Darjeeling that is good is being harder and harder to find. Will definitely repurchase!
