Tea Story

The exquisite leaves of our revered 2017 First Flush Darjeeling tea from the Margaret’s Hope tea garden, are plucked immediately after winter when the plants are bursting with succulent flavour. Harvested from one of the oldest and most famous Darjeeling estates, this 2017 harvest imparts a touch of astringency, but with all the usual crisp and sweet  flavour.

This sublime spring flush Darjeeling tea, boasts a fresh and fruity aroma accented by stunning hints of muscatel. With an intensely clear amber liquor, this is a truly exceptional tea to be enjoyed at any time of day.

Two rivers flow through the Margaret’s Hope garden where tea bushes - mainly of the Chinese Sinensis variety of the Camellia Sinensis tea plant - grow at an altitude of circa 3,000 - 6,000ft. The bushes are beckoned by the abundance of erns, trees, wild flowers, gushing streams, velvety moss, lichens and orchids that surround the estate.

The Margaret’s Hope garden produces some of the most exquisite teas in India - if not in the entire world - and is listed at the very top of all Darjeeling estates. The garden exists in balance with nature and applies forward thinking and eco-friendly production practises. Margaret’s Hope boasts the best natural habitat for salamanders in the entire region. The thriving salamander population is a symbol of the garden’s dedication to the environment.

Margaret’s Hope is located in the lower Kurseong subdivision of Darjeeling and has a fascinating backstory. The garden was established in the 1870s by the British man, Mr Cruickshank - only 30 years after the introduction of tea farming in the district. Cruikshank was inspired by the breath-taking views of the Himalayas. When Cruikshank’s daughter, Margaret, visited the garden, she fell in love with the abundance of natural beauty in the area and planned to return to the estaate. Tragically, however, Margaret died of a tropical disease on the ship sailing her back to England. To commemorate his daughter, Cruikshank re-named the garden ‘Margaret’s Hope’.

Since the tragic death of Mr Cruickshank’s daughter, the garden has evolved into an internationally recognised tea manufacturer that continues to honour the vision of Cruikshank and the memory of the young Margaret.

Margaret’s Hope’s fine quality loose leaf teas are in high demand within the international tea market. The First Flush harvest remains an exclusive and sought-after Darjeeling tea, which imparts a unique, flowery aroma and a fresh and clean taste of muscatel.

Excellent tea, Margaret's Hope 2nd Flush, swiftly delivered. Drunk without milk, tea is what it was meant to be - refreshing and nuanced.

This really is a simply superb tea: there is a regal clarity of taste that is sans pareil in my experience. It is worth whatever it costs occasionally to enjoy such a tea.

More green tea than black

Really delicate tea and the taste is hard to get consistently. Temperature of brew is important; too high and the taste is astringent.
Sometimes the wonderful taste of muscatel grapes comes through and sometimes not. It is quite possible that my palate is not sufficiently refined. Definitely worth a try for Margaret's story alone.
