Tea Story

Tuocha mini cakes provide a wonderfully convenient way to enjoy the exquisitely smooth and earthy flavours of Pu erh tea. To produce these little marvels, Pu erh tea leaves are steamed and compressed into little nests or mushroom-hat shapes that are aged for up to three years. The Tuocha are then individually wrapped to ensure the best possible result. This Pu erh tea belongs to the ‘Raw’ category, also known as ‘Sheng’.

Aged to perfection for two to three years, this delicately complex tea imparts a gloriously rich, russet liquor and a delightfully mild, sweet and earthy flavour that lingers in the mouth. To enjoy this most revered of teas, simply steep one Tuocha in near-boiling water for three to five minutes. To get the most authentic result, we recommend that you use a Gaiwan and follow the instructions in our Pu erh Brewing Guide.

Pu erh tea is made from large tea leaves that grow on trees and bushes in the mountainous area of Yunnan - the first tea region in the world. Some tea trees grow wild in this region and can be up to a thousand years old. Using ancient methods that have been passed down from generation to generation for hundreds of years, the tea leaves are carefully harvested, heat treated and sundried. They are then sent to specialist Pu erh producers who use age-old recipes to mix, steam and compress the leaves before ageing.

Aged: 2-3 years.

Ingredients: Pure Chinese Pu erh Tea.

*Note: Our Brewing Guidance below is based on the Modern Western Method. To find out how to brew your Pu Erh tea following the Traditional Chinese Method, read our blog post here.

Slightly different taste from the tea cakes I brought back from Yunnan Province but equally enjoyable. I think the kilo will keep me going through lockdown!

Good tea but good be better with further aging
Saturday, 25 January 2020  |  Russell

1st brew; Aroma of wood, and wet compost, a hint of something sweeter lurking beneath. Taste was woody, slightly leathery and very bitter (none of the promised sweetness from the aroma).

2nd brew; A stronger aroma of wood, and wet compost diminishing. Taste was woody, slightly leathery and the bitterness had almost gone, only to return in the aftertaste.

3rd brew; More subtle aromas of wood, and leather. Taste was woody, and the bitterness had gone, lingering taste on the tongue had a hint of the bitterness.

Overall a nice thick tea, super dark black on the 1st brew fading to a rich red amber on the 3rd, I think it could do with aging for another 5+ years to bring the bitterness down as it is still a young tea based on the taste. As the potential to become good with time. This is the reason I am giving it 4 stars. I got it as part of the pu'er discovery pack.
