Grown at Satemwa Tea Estate in Malawi’s Shire Highlands, this characterful black tea comes from one of Africa’s most historic tea-growing regions. Tea was first commercially planted in Malawi in the late 1800s, only a few years after tea cultivation began in Sri Lanka, giving the country a rich and often underappreciated tea heritage.

Satemwa itself was founded in 1923 by Scotsman Maclean Kay and remains one of Malawi’s last family-owned and independently run tea estates. Now managed by the third generation of the Kay family, Satemwa has built a reputation for innovation, craftsmanship and speciality tea production, while staying true to its roots as a working tea estate.

This tea is made from a distinctive Malawian cultivar known for its naturally high antioxidant and theanine content. The leaves are hand-plucked to fine standards before being brought to Satemwa’s speciality tea factory, where the withering process is carefully judged by the Teamaker. The leaf is then rolled, gently cut, oxidised and dried before sorting and grading.

The result is a medium-sized TSFBOP1 black tea with the reassuring strength of a breakfast tea, but with greater refinement and character than a conventional black tea blend. Expect a fresh, malty aroma, soft fruit notes and a full, satisfying flavour that lingers on the palate.

History, Origin & Terroir

Satemwa is located in the Shire Highlands of southern Malawi, an area known for its fertile soils, warm tropical climate and cooling highland conditions. These natural contrasts help create teas with both brightness and depth.

Unlike many large-scale African teas produced for commodity markets, Satemwa’s speciality teas are made in smaller volumes with a focus on leaf quality, cultivar, terroir and careful processing.

Process

This tea is hand-plucked, withered, rolled, cut, oxidised, dried and graded at Satemwa’s speciality factory. The process is designed to preserve the character of the Malawian leaf while creating a full-bodied, flavourful black tea suitable for everyday drinking.
