Our supreme grade of White Peony tea leaves (Pai Mu Tan) comes from the hometown of White Tea, in Fujian Province China, where it has been so named due to the larger leaves of the Camellia Sinensis tea plant cultivar having a similar appearance to the petals from the White Peony flower.

Hand picked on an early Spring morning with experience that has been handed down through the ages, the highest quality whole supple young leaves are collected before being naturally withered and dried in the sun. This simple, natural process, free of oxidization, allows White Tea leaves to be deficient in caffeine and preserve all its nutrients when it was first picked, including active enzymes, antioxidants, and polyphenols. Of which, the pharmacological benefits are said to be vast and may have cancer-fighting properties.

Once the leaves have dried, they have a plush, downy white whole-leaf appearance full of tender leaves and snowy silvery buds. When brewed, a golden peach infusion is produced that has the aroma of a fresh orchid. Upon the first sip, you will be greeted with a uniquely 'plush' mouthfeel partnered with light floral notes and honeyed pear.

With this white tea being low in caffeine, tea drinkers can enjoy White Peony at any time of day or night, unlike black and green teas.

Alternatives to this Chinese loose leaf tea

For another outstanding white tea from Fujian, our Jasmine Silver Needle is a beautifully fragrant example of a luxury white tea. Fujian is also famous for its green teas, and our Jasmine Dragon Pearls and Jasmine Green Tea are both beautifully floral examples of the style. Most of the best white teas are produced in China, but try the delicate and honey-like Rare Ceylon Silver Tips from Sri Lanka for a wonderful exception.

Region

Fujian, China

Fujian, a coastal province of southeastern China, faces the Taiwan Strait and is predominantly mountainous, covered in dense forests. The elevation spans from sea level to 2,174m at Mount Huanggang’s peak in the Wuyi Mountains, providing a natural barrier and a spectacular backdrop for tea cultivation. The province experiences a temperate humid subtropical climate with hot, rainy summers and cool, dryer winters, occasionally snowy in higher altitudes.

This climate, coupled with the province’s complex topography, supports a rich tapestry of vegetation and wildlife, creating an ideal setting for producing a variety of teas including Jasmine Green, Tie Guan Yin, Oolong, and smoked teas. Fujian is renowned for its rich, fertile soils and diverse flora at lower elevations, which include evergreens, hardwood trees, and a plethora of bird, amphibian, and reptile species. The higher elevations nurture deciduous trees and rhododendrons. The distinct teas such as those from the Wuyi Mountains and the white teas from the elevated, lush Fuding and Zhenghe counties are celebrated worldwide, making Fujian a critical and vibrant player in the global tea market.

Poor. This batch is lacking in flavour

I have been drinking this tea for many years now and enjoy it as my early morning cup. The delicate and most enjoyable flavour is, for me, perfect for that time of day and the description is accurate even though different batches, different crops, will ask for a different flavour relationship. And I value (and accept) that.

However this batch has none of the honeyed notes at all. The flavour is almost non-existent. I bought two of the 1K bags so I have much time to live with it. I guess it's possible, given my willingness to develop a new relationship with each batch, that I will find something to connect with. As it stands, I cannot recommend this present batch as it does not reflect the description.

    Hello Teri,

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback with us. We are truly sorry to hear that this batch of White Peony has not met your expectations and that you found it lacking in the honeyed notes you have come to enjoy from this tea over the years.

We completely understand your disappointment, as you rightly point out that different batches and crops can offer varying flavour profiles. We appreciate your willingness to explore each batch on its own terms, and we're disheartened that this particular one has not delivered the delicate flavour you value in your early morning cup.

We take this feedback seriously, as consistency in flavour is important to us. If you would like to discuss this further, please feel free to contact us at sales@theteamakers.co.uk and we'll be happy to assist you.

    Many thanks,
    Maddie

    Lovely delicate tea

This is a lovely delicate tea, it makes a great change to ordinary tea. It's refreshing with a subtle taste, I'm glad I tried it and will buy more.

    Maybe it's Marmite?

My first sip was puzzling, I couldn't decide if I really liked it or really didn't. I've decided it's like marmite. I like marmite and I like this tea, it's a good palette cleanser!
