Chai Tea

Loose Leaf Chai Tea

Traditional India Chai tea is a creamy tea made with hot milk instead of water. Chai tea is traditionally made by infusing ingredients such as black tea, cinnamon, cloves, cardamom and sugar into the hot milk.

Chai tea blends are made using ingredients such as rooibos, black tea, spices, herbs and sometimes also dried fruit. Our selection includes a Chai of Madagascar with African Rooibos, an Authentic Indian Masala Chai and a Calming Herbal Chai.

In India, Chai tea is a commonly consumed beverage that is consumed to aid digestion and create a sense of well-being. In recent years, the consumption of Chai tea has spread to most Western cultures and has become a very popular beverage in cafés - normally served as an alternative to cafe latte coffee.

While Chai tea is traditionally a milky beverage, you can brew chai tea with hot water. This makes a very different but equally enjoyable drink.

For the more creative cooks, chia tea is also a great ingredient for use in deserts. For example, you could infuse your milky chai tea into home-made ice cream or use it instead of plain milk when baking sponge cakes.

Traditionally, Indians viewed tea as a herbal medicine rather than a recreational beverage. The popular consumption of Chai tea, as a non-medicinal beverage in India, was the result of a campaign set forth by the British owned Indian Tea Association during the early 20th Century. The association encouraged employers in factories, mines and textile mills to give tea breaks to their workers. As this was a British campaign, tea was served with milk and sugar. Independent vendors would add spices and increase the amount of milk and sugar, thereby reducing the amount of black tea used. While this was not the intention of the campaign, it popularised the consumption of the milky Chai tea that the Indian population now know and love.
