How to Brew Matcha Tea

Matcha green tea can be prepared in two traditional styles depending on your preference. View our full Matcha brewing guide.

For Usucha (Thin Matcha), whisk 1.5 to 2g of matcha powder with 75ml of water at 60 - 70°C until a light foam forms. For Koicha (Thick Matcha), whisk 3.5 to 4g of matcha powder with 40ml of water at 60 - 70°C to create a rich, velvety brew.

For a stronger cup, use a little more tea and brew for a minute longer. For a lighter cup, simply reduce the leaf and shorten the steeping time. Feel free to experiment to find the balance that makes your perfect cup.

Prepare matcha green tea the traditional way using a bowl and bamboo whisk (chasen) for a smooth consistency. Explore our Matcha Essentials in the Teaware collection and learn about the Japanese tea ceremony in our Tea Journal.

Potential Health Benefits of Matcha

Matcha green tea is celebrated for its naturally high concentration of antioxidants, particularly catechins such as EGCG. Studies show that because the entire tea leaf is consumed, matcha provides a richer nutritional profile than standard brewed green tea, delivering higher levels of beneficial compounds including polyphenols and amino acids.

Many people enjoy matcha for its balanced caffeine content combined with L theanine, which helps promote calm focus, sustained energy and mental clarity without the sudden spikes associated with coffee. Matcha green tea is often included as part of a balanced lifestyle, supporting wellbeing, mindfulness and gentle daily vitality.

Origin and Craftsmanship

Our ceremonial matcha is produced in Ise Bay on Japan’s Pacific coast, a region with over 800 years of matcha heritage. The shaded cultivation, hand harvesting and stone grinding techniques are overseen by specialist Japanese tea farmers who view matcha as both an art and a cultural legacy.

For centuries, matcha has been enjoyed by monks, samurai and tea masters alike as a source of calm energy and focused awareness. Every caddy reflects that tradition, care and craftsmanship.

Frequently Asked Questions

Ceremonial Grade Matcha is the highest quality, made from first flush harvest, shade-grown leaves, ground slowly for a smooth, sweet, vibrant green tea without bitterness.

Keep refrigerated in its sealed bag, away from light and moisture. Once opened, consume within 6-8 weeks for optimal freshness. Never freeze.

This Ceremonial Matcha is perfect for those who are looking for a top quality matcha that offers a very pleasant and smooth taste as well as packed with healthy components. Ideal for those who are looking to incorporate a healthier way of improving their focus and sustained energy.

Ceremonial matcha is a very high-quality matcha harvested during the sought-after first flush, giving it a vibrant green colour, a high concentration of nutrients and a velvety smooth texture with a naturally sweet, distinct umami flavour that is best enjoyed on its own.

In contrast, culinary matcha has a stronger, more robust and often slightly astringent flavour, making it better suited for cooking, baking, smoothies and recipes where matcha is mixed with other ingredients.

Yes, ceremonial matcha can be used in lattes and smoothies for a smoother, sweeter flavour. Read our blog on how to make the perfect Ceremonial Matcha latte.

Matcha typically contains around 70mg of caffeine per serving, depending on preparation. It provides a gentler, more sustained energy release compared to coffee due to the presence of L-theanine. Learn more this in our blog on the benefits of regularly drinking matcha.

High-quality ceremonial matcha should have a vibrant, bright green colour, a fine silky texture, and a smooth, naturally sweet flavour with minimal bitterness.

Shade-growing increases chlorophyll levels and boosts amino acids like L-theanine, resulting in matcha’s vibrant colour, smoother flavour, and balanced energy effect.

Region

Ise Bay, Mie Pref, Japan

Located in the southeast of Japan, Ise Bay in Mie Prefecture fronts the Philippine Sea, showcasing a varied elevation from sea level to 64 meters. Characterised by a humid subtropical climate, the bay experiences distinct seasonal changes. Summers here are brief yet warm, with temperatures ranging from 21°C to 30°C, transitioning into cooler autumns and winters where temperatures can drop to between 4°C and 13°C. Spring gradually warms the region, setting the stage for another warm summer.

The bay’s weather pattern is predominantly cloudy or overcast, contributing to consistent, albeit varying, levels of rainfall throughout the year. Summer months witness significant cloud cover and the highest rainfall, amplifying the humidity to98%, which starkly contrasts with the drier air seen in late autumn and winter. Wind patterns also vary seasonally, with cool, strong gales typical throughout the year, becoming gentler during the summer months. The bay, enriched by the waters from the Kiso Three, Nikko, and Honai rivers, supports a rich marine life, famed for its fish and seaweed. On its southernmost tip lies the Ise-Shima National Park, a biodiversity hotspot that provides sanctuary to species such as loggerhead turtles and native plants like hibiscus and spider lily, making Ise Bay not just a scenic wonder but also an ecological treasure.

Terrible packaging, waste of my money

"Lovely tea, but awful packaging The tea tasted great — the three cups I managed to save (at least) were lovely. But the packaging ruined the experience. First, the powder exploded everywhere when I opened the bag. Then the tin kept puffing out clouds every time I opened it, no matter how slowly or carefully I tried. No visible warning signs on packaging so you dont know what to expect the first time. Not worth the mess or the money."
