What is Glenburn White Moonshine?

Glenburn Moonshine is a rare Darjeeling white tea made exclusively from the youngest buds of the Camellia sinensis plant. Harvested during the spring first flush, it represents the lightest and most delicate expression from the historic Glenburn Tea Estate, located in the cloud-shrouded foothills of the Himalayas.

For more detailed brewing advice, read our How to Brew Darjeeling Tea guide.

Production & Leaf Grades

This Moonshine grade is crafted only from the most tender spring buds, handpicked by experienced artisans. As a white tea, the leaves undergo no oxidation, relying instead on careful withering and drying to preserve their natural character.

Seasonal weather plays a critical role, meaning each year’s harvest expresses subtle differences in aroma and taste, adding to its collectable nature.

Wellbeing & Potential Health Benefits

White tea is known for being rich in polyphenols and catechins, compounds linked to antioxidant activity and cellular protection. Its low caffeine content also makes it a gentle alternative for those seeking clarity without overstimulation. Scientific research indicates that minimally processed teas such as white tea may support cardiovascular health and help reduce oxidative stress.

Origin & Craftsmanship

Nestled in the foothills of the Himalayas, Glenburn Tea Estate sits between two snowfed rivers in Darjeeling, the Rangeet and the Rung Dung wind through the spectacular Glenburn gardens, located in the Darjeeling district of West Bengal at elevations between 244m and 985m.

Founded in 1859 by a Scottish tea company, the estate is now run by the fourth generation of the Prakash family, celebrated locally as one of India’s most respected tea dynasties.

Beyond tea making, Glenburn is a place of outstanding natural beauty and recognised for its biodiversity, ethical labour practices and commitment to sustainable cultivation, producing teas that are as principled as they are exceptional.

FAQs

Is Glenburn Moonshine a white or black tea?

Glenburn Moonshine is a white tea. It is made exclusively from young spring buds and tender shoots that undergo minimal processing, resulting in a very delicate flavour and low astringency.

Does this tea contain caffeine?

Yes, but only in small amounts. As a white tea crafted from young buds and gently processed, Glenburn Moonshine is naturally low in caffeine compared to black or green teas.

What makes Moonshine grade tea special?

Moonshine refers to a rare grade made primarily from silver-tipped spring buds. These teas are produced in very limited quantities and are prized for their refined aroma, pale liquor and subtle complexity.

How should Glenburn Moonshine be stored?

Store the tea in an airtight container, away from light, heat and moisture. Correct storage helps preserve its delicate aromas and freshness over time.

Is each year’s harvest the same?

No. First flush teas express seasonal variation. Weather conditions during spring harvesting influence aroma, flavour and texture, making each year’s Glenburn Moonshine unique and collectable.

Region

Darjeeling, India

Darjeeling, nestled in the Himalayas of West Bengal, is bordered by Nepal, Sikkim, and Bangladesh. The district, rising to elevations from 1,000m to 3,600m, presents a dramatic landscape that supports diverse microclimates from subtropical to tundra. This variance allows Darjeeling to produce its unique high-grown teas, which are world-renowned for their delicate and complex flavours. The city itself, positioned at 2,100m, offers stunning views of Kanchenjunga and even distant Mount Everest from Tiger Hill. Darjeeling’s climate varies significantly with elevation, featuring wet, overcast summers and mild, clear winters, ideal for tea cultivation.

The tea gardens thrive on steep slopes, benefiting from efficient drainage and rich biodiversity, including rare orchids and the endangered red panda. Despite its proximity to Assam, Darjeeling’s teas are remarkably distinct, thanks to its unique topography and climatic conditions. The soil here, loose and prone to landslides, contrasts with Assam’s fertile plains, yet provides perfect conditions for the Camellia sinensis plant, resulting in teas that burst with flavour each spring.
