Sencha, Toasted Rice and Matcha in One Cup

Nutty toasted rice, fresh sencha and smooth ceremonial grade matcha. Our Great Taste award-winning Genmaicha Iri Matcha is mild, comforting and completely free of bitterness.

Three of Japan’s best loved ingredients in one loose leaf tea. Genmaicha Iri Matcha combines jade-green sencha leaves, roasted brown rice and a generous dusting of matcha powder, producing a soft green brew with a sweet aftertaste and warm, nutty-grassy character.

If you have been searching for Japanese green tea with roasted rice and matcha and were not sure what it was called, this is it.

Genmaicha vs Matcha: What is the Difference?

Matcha is a powder. Shade-grown green tea leaves are stone ground into a fine powder that you whisk into water and drink whole, leaf and all. It is intense, creamy and vivid green.

Genmaicha is a leaf tea. Whole sencha leaves are blended with roasted brown rice, then steeped and strained like any loose leaf tea. It is mild, toasty and light bodied.

Genmaicha Iri Matcha is genmaicha with matcha added, so you steep it like a leaf tea but drink some of the powder too. If you want matcha on its own, browse our matcha range. If you want the toasted rice character without matcha, try our Supreme Genmaicha.

Ingredients

Supreme Japanese Genmaicha (Japanese Green Tea, Roasted Rice and Popped Rice Kernels) and Ceremonial Matcha Powder (Shade Grown Japanese Green Tea)

How to Brew Matcha Iri Genmaicha

This is a delicate green tea and the water temperature matters more than anything else. See our brewing guides for more details.

  • 2-3g of loose leaf per cup
  • 200ml water at 70°C
  • Steep for 2-3 minutes

Do not use boiling water. At 100°C you scorch the sencha and the matcha turns bitter and dull. If you don’t own a temperature controlled kettle, boil and then let it stand for a few minutes.

Give it a gentle stir before drinking. The matcha settles, and stirring brings the creamy body back through the cup.

Origin & Craftsmanship

Our Genmaicha Iri Matcha is sourced from Ise Bay, Mie Prefecture, on the Pacific coast of Honshu. This is one of Japan’s most historic tea growing districts, with a heritage going back at least 800 years.

We have worked with the same grower in Ise Bay for many years, visiting the gardens and production facilities regularly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is genmaicha the same as matcha?

No. Matcha is a stone-ground powder that you whisk and drink whole. Genmaicha is a leaf tea blended with roasted brown rice that you steep and strain. This particular tea contains both, which is why the two often get confused.

How much caffeine is in genmaicha with matcha?

More than a plain genmaicha, because the matcha adds to it, and less than a cup of coffee. The roasted rice makes up part of the blend and contributes no caffeine at all, which is one reason genmaicha is traditionally seen as a gentler green tea. The exact amount depends on leaf quantity, water temperature and steeping time.

What temperature should I brew it at?

70°C, and this matters. Boiling water scorches the sencha and turns the matcha bitter. Boil the kettle and let it stand for around five minutes before pouring. Steep for 2-3 minutes using 2-3g per cup.

Region

Ise Bay, Mie Pref, Japan

Located in the southeast of Japan, Ise Bay in Mie Prefecture fronts the Philippine Sea, showcasing a varied elevation from sea level to 64 meters. Characterised by a humid subtropical climate, the bay experiences distinct seasonal changes. Summers here are brief yet warm, with temperatures ranging from 21°C to 30°C, transitioning into cooler autumns and winters where temperatures can drop to between 4°C and 13°C. Spring gradually warms the region, setting the stage for another warm summer.

The bay’s weather pattern is predominantly cloudy or overcast, contributing to consistent, albeit varying, levels of rainfall throughout the year. Summer months witness significant cloud cover and the highest rainfall, amplifying the humidity to98%, which starkly contrasts with the drier air seen in late autumn and winter. Wind patterns also vary seasonally, with cool, strong gales typical throughout the year, becoming gentler during the summer months. The bay, enriched by the waters from the Kiso Three, Nikko, and Honai rivers, supports a rich marine life, famed for its fish and seaweed. On its southernmost tip lies the Ise-Shima National Park, a biodiversity hotspot that provides sanctuary to species such as loggerhead turtles and native plants like hibiscus and spider lily, making Ise Bay not just a scenic wonder but also an ecological treasure.

    One of my favourite teas

This is one of my all-time favourite teas as it has absolutely no bitterness and the toasted rice provides a deliciously warm, nutty and comforting backdrop to the creamy, rich matcha and the freshness of the sencha.
