The origins of our Turmeric Latte Mix

We've struck gold with this luxury turmeric latte. Velvety smooth, lightly fragrant and with a vibrant orange colour that belies its mild, aromatic flavour, this powdered blend of coconut sugar, turmeric and vanilla is a delicious way to enjoy one of nature's most nutrient-rich foods.

If you want to enjoy the unique earthy spiciness and creamy mouthfeel of our Turmeric Latte Mix, it's easily prepared. Take a teaspoon of powder and add 250ml hot milk of your choice – dairy-free milk such as almond or oat milk is a good option for a vegan tea – then whisk with a milk frother for 30 seconds and enjoy. Turmeric is also naturally caffeine-free, making this latte ideal for drinking for any time of day.

The health benefits of turmeric

Turmeric burst into Western consciousness as a powerful health-boosting ingredient back in 2016. Still, this rhizome, or root, has, in fact, been used for thousands of years in Ayurvedic medicine and is an essential ingredient in many South Asian cuisines. Recent research has proved turmeric's worth as a nutritional powerhouse packed with minerals, antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties. Its main active ingredient is curcumin, which has been shown to have numerous health benefits, including helping to reduce the growth of cancerous cells. Because of its anti-inflammatory nature, curcumin has also been linked to reducing arthritis symptoms and risk from other age-related chronic diseases such as Alzheimer's.

What was turmeric root traditionally used for?

While recent research has caused a surge in turmeric's popularity in the West – where it's turned up everywhere from coffee chain menus to health-food stores – in Asia and the Middle East, it's still most commonly known as a kitchen staple. That earthy, bitter, slightly spicy character is why it's traditionally been used in combination with fats such as coconut milk and ghee in curries. Like ginger, its close relative, it's used dried or fresh, for flavour and as a colouring agent, in both sweet and savoury recipes.

In India, the 'golden milk' known as haldi doodh – a mix of milk, turmeric and complementary spices – has been drunk for centuries. The original turmeric latte, it's gently sweet, soothing and an all-around pick-me-up – much like our luxurious modern-day mix.

Alternatives to this creamy beverage

If you have a taste for unique flavours, try our sweet and fragrant Ruby Latte Mix. For all the health benefits of turmeric root without the heaviness of milk, try our caffeine-free Turmeric Spice luxury herbal tea – light and refreshing enough to be a perfect post-dinner palate cleanser. Masala Chai offers more authentic Indian spices in an invigorating, black tea blend, while our Chai of Madagascar is a stunning rooibos blend of fruit, spice and floral elements.
